Holland BPW’s hybrid truck runs on local company’s battery tech

HOLLAND — The Holland Board of Public Works’ newest bucket truck is outfitted with a battery-powered boom designed by a local energy tech company, allowing linemen to operate the bucket without running the engine all day.

The advanced lithium-ion auxiliary power system from Holland-based Volta Power Systems provides enough charge for nearly a full day of work, powering the hydraulic lift system, power tools and exportable worksite power.

Once the truck arrives at a work location, the engine can be turned off while the Volta system provides the power supply to get the job done. The hybrid technology cuts down on hours of idling, saving on carbon dioxide emissions, noise and engine wear.

“Holland is one of the first communities in the country using this type of advanced energy technology to help our community meet energy efficiency and anti-idling goals,” said Dave Koster, HBPW general manager. “A good portion of the working hours of our bucket trucks are spent idling, so this technology will significantly reduce the overall emissions of the vehicle.”

On the way to and from job sites, the battery system recharges from the alternator. It also charges in the garage without the need for specialized charging equipment.

HBPW said the ETI/Palfinger-made truck’s emissions-saving features bring the utility closer in line with its energy goals in the city’s Community Energy Plan.

Holland city government and HBPW recently adopted an electric vehicle purchasing policy that directs the city and public utility to buy electric or hybrid vehicles for its fleet, so long as there are electric or hybrid options that can do the job without a cost-prohibitive price tag.

Founded in 2014, Volta Power Systems designs and makes advanced lithium-ion power systems for RVs, boats and specialty vehicles.

“Over the past 15 years, Holland has seen the development of groundbreaking li-ion technology for EVs, and that same technology is at the heart of HBPW’s newest anti-idle system,” said Jack Johnson, co-founder and CTO at Volta Power Systems. “We’re really grateful to see the benefits of our community’s R&D investments come full circle back to Holland through this local partnership.”
