MOUNT PLEASANT — It was anything but easy, but Manistee High School’s Science Olympiad team took first place Saturday in its Region 3 Science Olympiad competition at Mid Michigan College in Mount Pleasant, topping Benzie Central by just eight points.

“It was an exciting day. … We were neck and neck with Benzie Central as results were posted throughout the day and at one point we were down by two,” said Kevin Postma, who coaches the team with Bridget Warnke, in an email. “Thankfully, when the final results came in, we pulled out a first place finish by eight points. With 23 events, that is a pretty close score.”

Science Olympiad is a team competition in which students compete in various events pertaining to various fields of science, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering.

Manistee’s first place finishers were Luke Smith and Sarah Huber in Astronomy; Ben Schlaff and Solana Postma in Environmental Chemistry; Solana Postma and Ceci Postma in Disease Detectives; Schlaff and Will Somsel in Bridges; Dylan Madsen, Somsel and Annika Haag in Experimental Design; Ceci Postma and Jacob Scharp in Forensics; Jared Wright and Jack O’Donnell in It’s About Time and Trajectory; and Wright and Scharp in Wright Stuff.

The Chippewas’ second place finishers included Scharp and Anna Herberger in Remote Sensing; Madsen and Avery Vaas in Ornithology; Solana Postma and Madsen in Green Generation; Herberger and Vaas in Rocks and Minerals; O’Donnell, Somsel and Smith in Codebusters; and Haag and Vincent Wang in Ping Pong Parachute.

With the win, Manistee advances to the state tournament on April 30 at Michigan State University.

“The competition will be tough but we will be prepared to compete,” Postma said.

I was born and raised in Manistee. I earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Grand Valley State University. My hobbies include fishing, reading and playing music.
