Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare, announced a grant to Bates Community Development Corp. (CDC) as part of a commitment to help improve the health of residents in Louisville’s Smoketown and Shelby Park neighborhoods. The $1.4 million in funding will be provided over the next four years.

The grant, given through Norton Healthcare’s James R. Petersdorf Fund, will support Bates CDC to help strengthen and expand its Healthy Hearts and Lifestyles Program, which addresses chronic diseases that exist within the community it serves.

Bates CDC’s Healthy Hearts and Lifestyles Program was created with a focus on providing healthy hot meals and a food pantry to the community, cooking classes and the promotion of healthy eating habits. The program has grown from initially feeding 50 people weekly to 5,500 in 2019. Since the pandemic began, the number has almost tripled to 14,500 in 2021.

Bates CDC, in collaboration with Kelly C. McCants, M.D., cardiologist and executive director, the Institute for Health Equity, a Part of Norton Healthcare, will expand its program to include basic health care screenings and preventive care specifically around cardiovascular health, women’s health and children’s health.
