The grants are being provided to students at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, UP Campus, which is headquartered at UP Health System-Marquette.

The first four recipients are:
 • Dominique Aleo of L’Anse, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Michigan Tech.
• John Berglund of Bergland, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Physiology from Northern Michigan University.
• Noelle Polakowski of Houghton, who received a Bachelor of Biomolecular Science degree from the University of Michigan.

To be considered for the scholarship, medical students must be in their second, third or fourth year of medical school with assignments in the Upper Peninsula, and a willingness to practice in the U.P. after residency training.

Preference is given to medical students from Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. Secondary preference goes to medical students from the Upper Peninsula, and tertiary preference goes to medical students who are not from the U.P., but intend to practice in the area.
