Rep. Darrell Issa has asked the State Department to immediately “surge” the processing of passport applications as San Diegans resume foreign travel.

In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Issa urged the State Department to “surge resources by resuming full staffing, adding extra hours of service and operations to assist customers, and provide the necessary support and resources to relieve overburdened staff and clear the backlog of passport requests.”

The Transportation Security Administration said it screened 2.02 million passengers on Friday at U.S. airports, the highest number since March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic slashed travel demand.

“Thankfully, Americans are on the move again and the resumption of travel is essential to our national economic rebound,” Issa wrote in the June 18 letter. “Unfortunately, the federal government’s response to the growing backlog of U.S. passport requests is indifferent at best.”

Issa, who represents the 50th District in east San Diego County, said his constituents are grateful for the work of the passport-processing staff, but more help is needed immediately.

“Only the federal government can fix this problem right away to restore international travel,” he wrote.
