Elyrians volunteers to repair bicycles donated to the city as part of the second annual bicycle donation drive.

After more than 300 bicycles have been donated, inspected and repaired, they will be provided free of charge to city residents, said Ren Flanders, assistant safety service director.

“This would not have been possible without a partnership between the Elyria Bicycle Education Center and the Lorain County Community Action Agency,” she said.

Just this month, we had two volunteer preparation days, and volunteers came to support the project.

Jon Olszewski volunteered his time and remembered the time he spent biking with his children.

“I just wanted to get a little more involved in the community,” he said. “The kids and I have been biking since childhood, but I knew what I was doing on my bike. I thought about what I could do.”

Volunteers spent time cleaning and disinfecting bicycles, adjusting gear, installing brakes, and sorting out which bicycles were available and which weren’t.

“This is for Ellians who want to ride, work and play. We want them to be active and this is a great way to do that.” Flanders said.

Next week, from 9am to 1pm, the 2nd Annual Build-A-Bike Event will take place at the West Park Garage on Foster Avenue 1200 in Elyria.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring the relevant tools and spare parts they need.

“If people have experience and want to come, that’s great,” Flanders said.

“But no experience is needed. We need someone to disinfect, wash and test drive the bike. There are always ways people can help.”

People can fill out online applications at: cityofelyria.org/bikesAccording to Flanders, it will take less than three minutes and will be distributed to selected people during June.

Volunteer Herb Delaporte said she is volunteering to help local people find a way to commute.

“There are no bike shops in the city of Elyria. Without transportation, people can’t go to work,” he said. “I want to help support the infrastructure that is beginning to appear. I also want to support EBEC.”

Repairing your bike is a good way to reduce waste and make better use of your resources, Delaporte says.

“We bring new life to these bikes and I feel this is right,” he said. You can take a wrench. “
