Greenville (SC) Powdersville three-star athlete Thomas Williams has gone public with his commitment to Virginia Tech.
The No. 8 overall recruit in South Carolina, Williams gave Virginia Tech his verbal commitment a few weeks ago during his official visit to campus. He announced his decision moments ago on Instagram.
“I chose Virginia Tech because I wanted to be a part of a family that will push me to become a better man in life and a family that I know will be by my side all the way through the process of development.”
Williams committed directly to Brent Pry following his official visit on June 10.
“I committed on my official visit,” Williams said. ”Me and Coach Pry sat down and talked about it and he was like ‘if you want to come, let’s make it happen’ and I told him I was ready to make it happen. When word got around to the staff, I knew they would be happy and welcoming, just as I thought.”
Recruited as an athlete, Williams could play on either side of the ball in Blacksburg and has been recruited as such.
“They want me to play on both sides of the ball,” he said.
On offense, the 5-foot 10-inch, 180-pound prospect is a productive high school running back and could suit up as either a running back or slot receiver in college after recording over 1,900-yards on the ground and a combined 24 touchdowns rushing and receiving. On defense, he can line up as a cornerback or safety.
A multi-sport athlete, Williams runs track for Powdersville and has clocked a personal best 11.16 100m. He also plays basketball at Powdersville.
Williams is the 15th overall commitment for Virginia Tech during the 2023 recruiting cycle and the first pledge from South Carolina.
Virginia Tech has seen a surge of commitments over the past week with pledges from Tavorian Copeland (Appomattox, VA), Aycen Stevens (Indianapolis, IN), Caleb Woodson (Haymarket, VA), Braylon Johnson (Highland Springs, VA), and Tralon Mitchell (Bailey, NC).
Williams committed to Virginia Tech over offers from West Virginia and Penn State.
