Virginia Tech football: Khalil Herbert standing out this preseason for the Chicago Bears

Share:

Khalil Herbert only played one season at Virginia Tech, but what a season it was for the running back.

In the strange year that was COVID-19, Herbert played in 11 games for the Hokies in 2020, rushing for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns. Herbert also finished with 179 receiving yards and a touchdown. He also proved to be a capable kick returner.

The sad part of Herbert’s time in Blacksburg is he never got to experience a game in a jam-packed Lane Stadium.

Somehow, Herbert wasn’t even a first- or second-team All-ACC selection at running back.

After Herbert’s one outstanding season in Blacksburg, he declared for the 2020 NFL draft, where he went in the sixth round to the Chicago Bears.

In his preseason debut last week, Herbert impressed with 38 rushing yards on just six attempts. He also made an impact as a receiver and kick returner.

In Chicago’s Week 2 preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Herbert scored his first NFL touchdown.

Herbert has a golden opportunity with the Bears. There is no standout behind starter David Montgomery, meaning he could become Chicago’s No. 2 back immediately. Tarik Cohen is more of a third-down back who can do several things for the Bears, and he’s coming off an injury.

Herbert is also vying to be Chicago’s primary kick returner.

We knew Herbert should’ve been selected higher in the 2021 NFL draft. It was certainly a smart pick for the Bears.
